According to a report, the Suzuki Ertiga people-mover will be the next model to receive a Toyota badge. The rebadging of Suzuki products as Toyotas has been fascinating to watch. Take the Suzuki Baleno, a good car that offered a lot of value for not much money, yet sold so few. However, stick a Toyota badge on it, call it the Starlet and the sales figures go through the roof. The car is fundamentally the same as the Suzuki, with just a different badge on the nose. The same can be said for the Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Toyota Urban Cruiser, with the latter selling in much greater numbers than the car upon which it is based. What’s the deal with Toyota and Suzuki here, anyway? Now, according to a fresh report coming out of Indian publication IndianAutosBlog, the Toyota/Suzuki product offensive is continuing with more rebadged cars in the pipeline. The big news is the Suzuki Ertiga will be given the treatment, and it will sit underneath the Toyota Innova. That model is no longer offered in South Africa, so we suspect the Ertiga will be rebadged as the new Toyota Avanza – a popular and affordable MPV. As before, we expect there to be no mechanical differences, with some slight cosmetic changes inside and out in order to differentiate it from its donor car. Toyota is not stopping there either and the Suzuki Ciaz sedan is also a target for a badge swap, but this would put it directly alongside the Toyota Corolla Quest, so we can’t see that happening in South Africa. The Corolla Quest is made at Toyota’s Prospecton facility in SA, further denting any hopes of a Toyota-badged Ciaz making landfall. It’s certainly interesting times for the two brands and while Toyota continues its local dominance in the sales charts, Suzuki’s astronomical growth over the past few years has been deeply impressive. Meanwhile, the Avanza is listed 75 mm shorter, 35 mm slimmer but it is 10 mm taller than the Ertiga. On the other hand, the Avanza’s wheelbase is shorter by 85 mm. This means that the Ertiga offers more shoulder- and leg-room compared to the Ertiga. Although the Avanza gives a little bit more headroom, but the small gap isn’t enough to turn things around. Nah, generasi terbaru Ertiga, sedang menjadi pertimbangan selain Avanza karena modelnya masih fresh dan banyak perubahan. Harganya pun kompetitif. Sementara Avanza, walau begitu-begitu saja dan makin membosankan, masih dipilih banyak orang lantaran faktor umum durabilitas, kemudahan perawatan, layanan purnajual, resale value dan merek Toyota. Tapi dari segi produk, apakah lebih baik dari Suzuki Ertiga terbaru? Kami coba sandingkan varian tertinggi kedua mobil ini, Suzuki Ertiga GX ESP melawan Toyota Avanza Veloz Karena dua tipe paling “apple-to-apple” dan harganya serupa. Mana yang jadi pilihan ideal untuk kebutuhan Anda? Desain dan Dimensi Seperti saya singgung di atas, sudah bosan melihat Avanza di jalanan. Desainnya tak banyak berubah dari Avanza generasi kedua. Varian Veloz lebih sedap dipandang dari Avanza G maupun E, sebab menganut fascia berbeda. Namun untuk meyakinkan sebagai kasta tertinggi, Veloz dipersolek banyak aksen kromium agar tampil mewah. Kalau all-new Ertiga menjadi perdebatan tersendiri. Tak lain eksteriornya yang mencampuradukkan desain mobil lain. Paling enak melihat bagian mukanya, tapi terselip kemiripan dengan wajah Toyota Kijang Innova. Bagian belakang malah kontroversial. Mirip Mitsubishi Xpander tapi tidak lebih enak dipandang. Ciri floating roof di pilar D juga sudah banyak dipakai. Setidaknya belum sepasaran Avanza di jalan dan masih dianggap mobil baru. Mengukur dimensi, Ertiga sedikit besar hampir di segala sisi. Veloz lebih tinggi dan kakinya jenjang karena memakai konstruksi unibody semi-monokok sebagai platform. Pun ground clearance 200 mm menjadi pertimbangan tersendiri karena mumpuni melibas berbagai kondisi jalan. Kabin Ertiga bertambah lapang dan nyaman untuk mengakomodir 7 orang penumpang. Melarnya dimensi bodi sangat mempengaruhi, begitu pula ruang kargo di belakang. Kelegaannya bisa dikatakan seimbang dengan Veloz. Tapi menurut kami, jok Ertiga lebih nyaman saat diduduki. Baris ketiga juga sama, meski ruangnya terbilang mirip. Tetap mampu menampung orang dewasa, asalkan dengan postur tidak terlalu besar. Fitur Perbedaan harga keduanya sangat tipis, bahkan tipe matik lebih mahal Veloz sedikit. Penentuan harga Ertiga terbilang cukup jeli karena naiknya tidak terlampau banyak dari model lama. Bila melihat dari perubahan dan banyak fitur baru, value for money Veloz tidak setinggi Ertiga. Cukup banyak fitur di Ertiga yang tidak ada di Veloz. Mulai dari smart entry dan tombol start/stop engine yang tanpa membutuhkan anak kunci lagi. Head unit monitornya juga lebih besar, berukuran 6,8-inci. Fitur printilan tak kalah penting seperti ventilasi pendingin di cup holder dan power outlet untuk penumpang baris kedua. Akomodasi kabin terbilang praktis karena kursi baris kedua dan ketiga dapat dilipat rata. Dan yang terpenting, ada fitur keselamatan terkini Electronic Stability Program ESP dan Hill Hold Control HHC. Avanza Veloz? Nihil! Performa dan Pengendaraan Naiknya kapasitas mesin Ertiga, membuat perbandingan performa mesin antara LMPV seimbang. Apa yang kami rasakan setelah mencobanya, mesin K15B 1,5-liter memang makin bertenaga dari K14B. Terutama torsi besar yang sudah banyak terhimpun sejak putaran mesin rendah. Tipikal Suzuki yang memadukan penggerak roda depan FWD dan rasio gigi transmisi halus, efisiensi bahan bakar pastinya terbilang irit. Namun tarikannya tergolong berimbang dengan Veloz bermesin 1,5-liter. Apalagi output Ertiga ternyata nyaris sama dengan mesin 2NR-VE milik Veloz. Yang membedakan hanya dari karakter tenaga dan penyalurannya. Veloz sangat mencirikan khas Avanza sejak generasi pertama. Dengung gardan untuk menggerakkan roda belakang RWD masih terdengar dan rasio gigi rapat-rapat. Kencangnya Avanza sudah sering dibuktikan. Tapi pada dasarnya, mobil ini dirancang untuk mengangkut beban berat dan cocok menjadi pekerja keras. Jelas, mengemudikan Ertiga terasa lebih nyaman. Begitu pula dengan karakter berkendara. Walau bantingan suspensi Avanza sudah dibuat senyaman mungkin, tetap tidak senyaman dan sestabil Ertiga. Kuncinya ada di perbedaan platform. Ertiga layaknya sedan karena pakai struktur monokok. Apalagi generasi terbaru ini mengadopsi platform HEARTECT yang diklaim lebih ringan dan rigid.
